This naturally brings to mind the infamous Rush Limbaugh comment about wanting Obama to fail. (Indeed, I suspect he wants not just failure, but epic failure).
I think Klein is correct with her "Shock Doctrine" theory. Authoritarians feed on paranoia, and you're never able to stoke the paranoid fervor more than when an attack is fresh in people's minds.
